• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #1 - Learn where the casinos traditionally keep their better paying loose slot machines!  A "loose machine" is defined as a slot machine that - during it's entire lifecycle - is programmed to pay back a greater percentage than the average machine.  For example, a slot machine that is programmed to pay back 95% means that it is programmed to pay back 95% of all the money that it takes in.  The average for the casino may be 87%, so you obviously want to spend your time playing on the slot machines that are most likely to payback more often! 
  There are no guarantees that you will win during your relatively short session at a looser slot machine but statistically speaking, you are more likely to win on a loose slot machine than a tight slot machine.  Instead of playing blindly and hoping for a "hot slot machine", you should take every legal advantage offered to you and understand which slot machines are most likely to be loose.
  But how do you find these loose slot machines?  That is a well guarded industry secret and it has finally been revealed in a book called Break the One-Armed Bandits! Not only does this book reveal which area of the country has the loosest slot machines, but it will teach you how to spot the best paying slot machines on the casino floor.  The psychology of machine placement makes for a very interesting read.
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #2 - Sign up for the players club card!  This sounds very obvious but you may be surprised by how many people don't do it.  They make excuses like "the line was too long" or they don't think they play enough to earn comps.  Nonsense - your slot play keeps the casinos in business!  Even if you have a relatively small bankroll of $100, it is likely that you will "win some and lose some", so by the time that $100 runs out you may have played several thousands of dollars worth of slots without even realizing it! 
  By signing up for the card, you become eligible for comps (complimentaries) which are perks, such as free meals, discounted/free rooms, free tickets to shows, prizes and cash!  Within a couple of weeks of signing up you can expect to receive promotional materials from the casino inviting you back for a free night or two! The casino may also entice you to come back by offering you FREE MONEY.  It is not uncommon to be offered $100 just for stepping foot in the door.  It is really that simple, so take advantage of it.  (Of course they are inviting you back because they are hoping to take your money in the casino, but the free room and meals help take the sting out of your potential losses.)  
  During a recent vist to Atlantic City, I did a simple experiment.  I walked down the boardwalk and signed up for the players club card at most of the casinos.  I then played the slots at each casino for a short while - $20 worth on the quarter slots.  That was enough to get me on the mailing list and fill my mailbox with monthly "2 free night" offers from several of the casinos!  Competition between casinos is more intense than ever and they all offer similar programs to reward their players - high roller or not.  
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #3 - Always play maximum coins!  You will only win the bigger jackpots by playing maximum coins.  The slot machines are programmed to reward the players who spend the most money and take more chances.   
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #4 - Don't bother with the penny and nickel slots!  You would be foolish to believe that a penny or nickel gamble will earn you a sizeable return.  In reality, if you play the recommended maximum coins on these machines, each spin can cost you well over a dollar!  Historically, penny and nickel slots are programmed to return a lower amount than the other denominations, so if you are going to wager a dollar (or more) per spin you may as well play it on a higher denomination slot machine!  If you are just looking to pass the time and spend a leisurely afternoon at the slots, then you can go ahead and play these slot machines for a single coin.  Just be realistic in your expectations.
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #5 - The higher the denomination, the higher the risk and the higher the reward!  As stated above, penny and nickel slot machines are historically programmed to be "tight".  Quarters, dollars, and up are programmed to be "looser".  The higher the denomination, the looser the slot machines, on average.  
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #6 - For those of you who are daring enough to venture into the high roller area, take a good look at the pay tables atop the slot machines.  With a little luck and a lot of nerve, playing these slot machines can pay off handsomely.  They can also spell your quick demise.  You might be surprised how quickly you can lose $500 without even trying!
  If you can afford to take the chance, a single lucky spin on a high denomination slot machine can reward you with several thousands of dollars.  These higher denomination slot machines are also historically programmed to pay back higher percentages than the lower denomination slot machines.  Much greater risk, much bigger potential reward. 
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #7 - Of all the machine games, video poker is considered to be the smartest gamble.  Rather than playing a mindless game of chance you actually have some say in the outcome when you play video poker.  A skilled player can actually expect a GREATER THAN 100% payout with perfect play during the lifetime of a loose video poker machine.  Of course, perfect play is very difficult, but these video poker machines do offer a greater chance of winning.
  Much like the slot machines, not all video poker machines are the same.  Although they may offer the same games, the pay tables can be drastically different from machine to machine.   Once again, the smart players will want to take every legal advantage offered to them and play the "loosest machines".  How do you find these "loose video poker machines"?  You go to the source on Video Poker, Bob Dancer.   For all the advantages that video poker affords you, you should be aware of one potential negative.  Unlike video poker, you can not practice for the slot machines.  The casinos know that when you choose to play video poker you are giving yourself a better chance at winning than by playing the regular slot machines.  As such, you may notice that you do not earn as many comp points as someone who exclusively plays the slot machines.  Once again, risk/reward.   
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #8 -There are no legitimate slot machine "get rich quick" programs.  You may find lots of websites and expensive newsletters promising you slot machine riches, but the truth is that nobody can make that promise and stand behind it.  Much like trying to predict numbers in The Lottery, you can not predict which slot machines are about to get hot at a given moment. 
  Slot machines cycle through thousands of random outcomes PER SECOND.  This means that if you hesitate for just a moment before spinning the reels the outcome is going to be different than it would have been if you spun more quickly (or more slowly.)  In other words, it is luck!  Your timing needs to be perfectly in sync with that of the machine in order to win... or lose. 
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #9 - Even though some slot machines are programmed to be looser, you should remember that any machine can hit at any time!  You might be doing everything right, from signing up for the player's club card, to finding the "loose slot machines", to playing video poker, yet you might not be a winner that day.  Don't be surprised if you see other people winning on what you might not consider a good choice of machine.  Remember, most of this is LUCK and it is this game of chance and the excitement of watching other people win that brings us back to the casinos time and time again.  Be happy for the winners, and remember your next spin could also make you a winner!
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #10 - Avoid the casino ATM machines!  These machines normally have at least a $3 surcharge.  In the grand scheme of things, $3 may not be much, but it would be a smarter move to only playthrough your original intended bankroll and walk way when those funds have dried up. The casinos are counting on you to make impulsive moves and to keep feeding their machines - the ATMs AND the slots.  Hit the ATM BEFORE going to the casino! 
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #11 - Manage your money wisely.  As stated above, it is unfortunately VERY EASY to lose a lot of money VERY quickly.  If you are impulsive and lack self discipline, it would be wise to take a reasonable bankroll to the casino, play it through and STOP.  If you do not trust yourself DO NOT travel to the casino with an ATM or credit card.  More realistically, keep your ATM and credit cards (for true emergency purposes) with someone else in your party who you can trust to not give into your impulses, no matter how demanding you may get.  After a cooling off period you will thank them for keeping you away from the ATM.  Play wisely, have fun and always gamble within your means.  Gambling the mortgage money is NOT within your means. 
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #12 - Take the bus!  If you live a few hours from a casino I recommend researching the local charter bus companies.  Using Atlantic City as an example, the bus company charges approximately $35 per person round trip.  When you arrive at the casino you are given $20 in gambling vouchers and a $15 buffet lunch voucher.  In the end, transportation was free and you did not have to hassle with the high cost of gas, tolls, traffic or wear and tear on your own car.
  If you decide to go for an overnight stay it costs about $55 per person, with the same offers for the gambling and meal vouchers.  This is still a very good deal considering that you may be staying overnight in a FREE ROOM with all meals paid for, if you use your comps wisely.
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #13 - A trip to the casino is only as enjoyable as your current winning streak!  If you are winning then you will have a great time, but if you are losing then a casino can be a miserable place.  Smart slot machine players have the discipline to quit while they are ahead rather than being tempted to lose all the money right back to the machines. 
• Win at Slot Machines Strategy #14 - Most casinos do not pay winnings in coins anymore.  Instead the machines print out tickets that can be cashed in at machines or the cashier counter.  Once you win a sizeable amount ($50 - $100, for example), you should print the voucher, forget about it, and put it away until the end of the trip.  Consider that money to be untouchable until it is time to leave.  To resist temptation, leave the ticket in your room safe until the moment you checkout.  Then you can cash it in on your way out the door, and you are guaranteed to not leave empty handed. 
• In summary, the best strategy is to try to find the loosest machines and take full advantage of the casino's comp program.  If you have a lucky day you will be a winner.  If you did not have a lucky day, you hopefully minimized your losses by staying within your pre-defined bankroll.  You can get 'em next time.  And next time your room and meals may be paid for. :)
